We usually handle the latest Windows 10 updates and issues, but sometimes we’re victims of errors in the operating system. Last week, we had a strange Windows 10 issue that prevented our Start menu from opening, which of course was a major inconvenience.

Every time we clicked on the menu or pressed Windows, we were given the following message: “Critical Error: Your Start menu doesn’t work. We’ll try to fix it the next time you sign in. “

Unfortunately, solving the problem was not as simple as shutting down and reopening; and online knowledge shortages have made it surprisingly painful to bring full functionality to our device.

Windows 10 error: ‘Your Start menu isn’t working’

The famous Windows Start menu provides easy access to all kinds of important functions and features, from apps to files, settings, power options, and more.

Therefore, while the operating system is still technically available when the Start menu is out of use, the experience becomes disjoyed and much less smooth.

Although some articles about the Windows 10 Start menu error date back to 2015, there is a surprising lack of information online about what might be causing the problem and how it should be fixed. The recommendations available (mostly from third parties) are quite varied and often ineffective in our experience.

We’ve tried signing in and out, restarting Safe Mode, restarting Windows Explorer, checking windows 10 and driver updates, removing DropBox and our antivirus service – all of which appear in online advice materials. In the end, though, we had to reset it to a complete factory settings.

To make things worse, we had committed a great sin of not keeping an up-to-date replacement; The newest one was more than nine months old.

Mercifully, this particular Windows 10 error didn’t stop us from browsing Windows Explorer and copying our latest files to an external hard drive. But if that wasn’t the case, we’d be in trouble.

The problem reminded us in a timely way that we should always keep regular backups, and we won’t make the same mistake again. As a reminder, the best way to protect your valuable data is to implement the 3-2-1 backup rule: store three copies of data in two types of media, and a copy is stored off-site.

Microsoft has not yet responded to our request for clarification on what might be causing the Windows 10 Start menu problem and whether there is a reliable solution that does not include a full factory reset.
