Fitzhuw’s novels, written in an era of political disobedience, are full of resistance: authority, conformism and even – radically for a child author – pretense.

As a children’s writer and lesbian, Fitzhuy was often forced to hide his true nature. “Sometimes you have to lie” tells the story of her hidden life and the creation of her masterpiece, which remains long after her death as evidence of the complex relationship between truth, secrecy, and individualism.
