The Sony WH-1000XM4 offers excellent noise suppression and surprising sound quality, all in a lightweight and comfortable design. While they don’t look very different from their predecessors, a number of new features, including multi-point coupling, DSEE Extreme upstream conversion, conversation awareness, and automatic playback/pause using a built-in sensor, all help the WH-1000XM4 claim the title of best headset in 2020.

By all possible settings, Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless headphones are a wonderful pair of wireless noise-reducing headphones – and they are our choice for the best headphones of 2020. They offer exactly what they promise and even some thanks to their exceptional noise cancellation and support of advanced codecs.

Although they haven’t seen a massive aesthetic overhaul of the Sony WH-1000XM3 that was released in 2018, the WH-1000XM4 contains a number of new enhancements such as the DSEE Extreme audio upscaling and multi-point coupling that should really appeal to the crowd.

In addition to the settings listed above, the Sony WH-1000XM4 supports Sony’s 360 Reality Audio format that allows spatial audio on stereo headphones as well as the LDAC codec that can send a binary flow of up to 990 kbps. The unfortunate thing, however, is that it no longer supports aptX or aptX HD, so the mileage of your Hi-Res Audio support may vary.

Thanks to their feeling of comfort and their excellent noise suppression, we completely recommend them to travelers, but they are not perfect for training enthusiasts who need a safe fit and water resistance – or businessmen who need the best microphone in its class. For almost everyone, however, these are the best headphones you can buy (so far) this year.
