The Finest Garmin Smartwatches For 2020

Whether you’re an experienced road runner or start regular workouts or love going on the trails on weekends, it doesn’t have to be hard to pick the best Garmin smartwatches as we collect the best options for each user. If you’re just getting started, for example, you can think of Garmin forerunner 30, while serious athletes can opt for Garmin Fenix 6. There are lots of other great Garmin smartwatches to consider, and we’ve added an overview, a list of features, and main good and bad points for each of them, so you can easily narrow down the options.

As a result, you should not go too wrong on any of the Garmin smartwatches below, but to take a closer look at any of them, be sure to click on our full reviews.

And if you haven’t sold any of Garmin’s products, go to our best smartwatch or best running time guides for other options. And check back regularly, because we’ll update all these guides when new contestants show up. We recently received the new Garmin Forerunner 745 and will add to this roundup if we find it valuable in our long-term tests.

  • Garmin Fenix 6: The Garmin Fenix 6 is perhaps the ultimate multi-sport smartwatch and certainly the ultimate model offered by Garmin. Or, well, Garmin Fenix 6x pro-solar in any case, but the entire Fenix 6 series, wearables are really at the highest level.
  • Garmin Forerunner 35: Now we’re going into another price range and we’re dealing with Forerunner 35, a more fashion-conscious middle-class unit that brings together some powerful functions. The most obvious difference between all watches detailing 35 and above is the introduction of Garmin’s Elevate technology, which allows heart rate monitoring on the wrist.
  • Garmin Forerunner 945: The Garmin Forerunner 945 is the best of Garmin’s running-oriented smartwatches. It’s not as full of features as the more sports-focused Fenix 6, but if all you care about is work, it should have everything you need and then some.
  • Garmin Vivoactive 4S: Some Garmin watches are quite useful in design, and while the face of a Garmin Instinct Solar (below) is no bigger than a typical smartwatch, its overall appearance can be very impressive on a thinner wrist.
  • Garmin Instinct Solar: Garmin Instinct Solar isn’t the only watch that can get regular loading through its Power Glass display, but it’s certainly the most impressive when it comes to longevity, and theoretically, it can last forever between charges when in power-saving mode. In real-world use, this is unlikely, but a few hours of sunlight means that even if GPS is enabled, you can use Instinct Solar for days instead of hours.
  • Garmin Vivoactive 3: The versatile Garmin Vivoactive range offers super-detailed activity tracking capabilities complete with powerful GPS and heart rate sensors that make it suitable for everyday runners who like to track overall activity.
  • Garmin Forerunner 645 Music: It’s certainly not the only Garmin watch that can play your favorite tunes, but recent price drops mean you’ll get the most out of Garmin Forerunner 645 Music if your music is the most important part of your workout. You can leave the phone at home with space for 500 songs via offline playlist transfer or downloads.
