ASUS ROG Strix XG17 Review – The Best Gaming Monitor

Working or playing games on the go is often more difficult than setting up a home. There are lots of great and powerful laptops, but it can be difficult to play sitting flat on the table on a small screen and they don’t always have the latest specifications. Enter ASUS ROG Strix XG17. With a crazy 240 hz refresh rate, this 17.3-inch panel can run for about 3.5 hours at maximum speed on its built-in battery and is easy to pack thanks to its 0.4 inch thickness. Go downstairs to watch the video and see it in action.

Meets Portable Premium

First, the XG17AHP is packed with features and accessories and carries a price tag that reflects that. You can select the panel and cover it for $499.99, or go to the upgraded full package we have here with the XG17AHP.

From $599.99, the ASUS ROG Strix XG17 rivals the price of a large number of good desktop screens. But the list of portability and features is quite impressive here. This 17.3″ 1080p IPS panel features incredibly fast 240 Hz refresh rate, adaptive synchronization, factory-calibrated 100% sRGB color and 3.5 hours of uptime while playing at 240 Hz. It may be a special screen, but it is definitely special.

What’s in the box?

ASUS has put together a lot of useful accessories in this XG17AHP package. Along with the display is a tripod that can look higher with a telescope to place the monitor on a standard laptop screen or just hold it sideways.

It also includes a smart cover that can protect the screen but also holds it in vertical or horizontal modes. Like some kind of iPad smart cover, it can fold in different ways to keep the monitor at a convenient angle to work on the desk. Vertical mode is a great addition for those who prefer this layout when working.

ASUS ROG Strix XG17AHP also comes with a USB-C cable, micro-HDMI to full-size HDMI, a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, and a power brick for USB-A connectivity. So as soon as it comes out of the box, it should be ready to shake in almost any situation.

And there’s a carry-on bag in this package to carry them all. The display with these clean pockets at the bottom, which fits perfectly on the tripod, is big enough for the laptop and all accessories.

Design and layout

Overall, the ASUS ROG Strix XG17 monitor has a slim, clean design. The monitor itself is only 0.4 inches thick, making it highly portable. Fast inserting the release part for the ROG stand provides some thickness to the back, but it’s much more convenient with this stand. There are speakers at the bottom.

On the left side of the screen are all controls, as well as inputs and outputs. There are four buttons at the top that function as menu navigation and selection, and micro HDMI and USB-C ports at the bottom, as well as another USB-C port for charging. Finally, the XG17 has a headphone outlet with a built-in DAC to operate the headphones.

Use ASUS ROG Strix XG17

Of course, this monitor is designed for life on the go. With its tripod and screen saver/coffee table, it’s easy to position the screen in the direction that best suits your scenario. To edit videos, it’s handy to place them on my regular laptop for some additional screen spaces and ergonomically make my body a little easier.

In addition, placing it higher is great for gaming. Laptop games can often be a bit painful with screens on the desktop, but having the screen in a more comfortable viewing position is huge.

Personally, I love how portable ASUS ROG Strix XG17 is. Previously, when editing differently than my normal setup, I usually wouldn’t have thought of bringing in an additional screen. But now it’s not only possible, it’s also very easy with the XG17. Its slim design and protective cover and quick-to-remove ROG stand make it easy to carry with me when working outside the house. Editing video on an older MacBook Pro has been made much easier with this screen.

ASUS ROG Strix XG17: Completion

Overall, the XG17 is expensive but adds a ton of versatility to portable gaming or operation setup. And it’s made even more useful with the ROG stand. The incredibly fast 240 Hz refresh rate offers a sharp 1080p IPS display with 100% sRGB color and factory calibration, leaving other portable displays in the dust.
